Portsmouth Clubs

This is not in anyway an impartial view of the clubs in Portsmouth, it is strictly what I think of them - IE. my opinion. You should probably bear in mind that I am into metal and think most dance music is pretty pants.

This review was current around 2002 - things have likely changed.

Uropa (Route66)
This place used to rock on metal night (Mondays) in a very big way. It's stuck right in the middle of the town centre down the road from the union. To be fair it started to go crappy before it turned into Route 66 but I don't think this helped. They play a random mixture of music that makes nights there truly hit and miss. My advice is to go with lots of mates and get really pissed then if they play dodgy music it wont matter so much. A bonus is drinks aren't too expensive.

The Crypt
Wednesday night in Scandals Cellar Bar. Damn good music - the DJ bird plays some really good stuff, we've had everything from Offspring to Slayer. More of a social metal night than a club, come with some friends, have a few beers and listen to some good music. (I haven't been to this for ages - don't even know if it's still running).

Chaos
Down the pier on a Saturday night. Music is quite Indie sometimes but the one of the DJs (Will) does a good job when they let him play metal. Used to be hugely expensive but isn't so bad now.

The Union
Portsmouth's Student Union is cheap and most of the time it's packed. The music is generally shite. [Note: when the Union is full it can really suck arse - IE 2 days to get a pint at the bar] When it puts on a bit of a do it can be a laugh but when I go 99% of the time I wonder why I bothered.

Subversion
Friday nights at EQ. Plays a general mix of heavy stuff, the DJ is very good and has been doing this for a long long time. This is my night of choice and they sell Stella!!
